Results Without Authority

What Readers Say

Wendy M. Pfeiffer, Enterprise PMO Manager,YAHOO! Inc.

As PMs, our essential struggle is to lead cross-functional initiatives through the mesh of organizational hierarchies and interpersonal politics that compose today's high tech companies. I have often wished for a roadmap to guide myself and my team. Results Without Authority is that roadmap, and I plan to refer to it often.

Craig Chatterton, General Manager, SupportSoft Inc.

Results without Authority delivers on its promise. It's an excellent guide for project managers that provides a great blend of what to do, how to do it, and why to do it. At the same time it provides the reader with a range of options and approaches that can be adapted to almost any project. And as Tom so eloquently points out, successful project execution is all about people. Whether the topic is planning, process or metrics, he explains how effective project managers exercise influence—which is far more powerful than authority.

Patrick Neal, PhD, Senior Project Consultant, Corporate Program Management Office, Intel Corporation

Kendrick weaves theory and practice to build a comprehensive set of tools, templates, and checklists that can be used by everyone from the newly appointed project manager to the steely veteran. This volume is the most practical, down-to-earth, treatment of managing without authority that I have ever read. Results without Authority must be required reading for all project managers, whether they have authority or not. Read it today and start using it tomorrow.

Dave Fullerton, Vice President of Professional Services, Movaris Inc.

If Tom Sawyer had used this book, his friends would have done a far more than just whitewash a fence. Results without Authority is a great guide for getting teams to buy into objectives and deliver results, and it will help anyone be a better project leader.

Ron Benton, Program Manager, Global Operations Strategy and Planning, Hewlett-Packard Company

Results without Authority offers critical insights into how to successfully lead, plan, and deliver a project beyond the scope of a leader's authority. Perhaps more importantly, it offers a valuable framework to help that leader achieve success again and again.

Jennifer Tharp, Project Management Consultant, San Francsico, CA

Results without Authority covers a lot of ground, and there's something for every level of project manager. The book would serve well as a guideline for someone leading a new project management organization, or for someone who's been in the profession a while, but would like to refine their skills beyond what's done in their own organization.

I particularly enjoyed a section about how to build currency with your team -- how to start, and how to enhance it over time. The author has really done an astounding job of putting into words something I'd have a hard time describing, and he gives lots of great ideas that are much more rational and sustainable than the usual team-building exercises you still see at organizations.
